It’s World Autism Awareness Week and The National Autistic Society (NAS) have released another fantastic film to raise awareness of autism, Diverted. The film features Saskia Lupin, an autistic actor, as she experiences sensory sensitivities and unexpected changes during her train journey. Diverted is part of NAS’s ongoing Too Much Information campaign.

Over 99% of people have heard of autism, but only 16% of autistic people feel the public understand them, NAS created the TMI campaign in order to help the public better understand autism, the person and the change they can make.

The first film, released in 2016, featured 11 year old Alex. The POV film, Can you make it to the end?, shows the viewer what an everyday experience, like shopping, can be like for someone with autism. Can you make it to the end? went viral and was viewed by over 55 million people across social media.

In their second TMI film, Make it Stop, NAS wanted to highlight the fact that some autistic people require more time to process information. The film depicts schoolgirl Holly going through her day and becoming overwhelmed. As part of the process Holly led an assembly for her classmates to screen the film and talk about her day-to-day experiences.

More than 1 in 100 people are on the autistic spectrum, with those diagnosed often finding social situations difficult and struggle to filter out the sounds, smells, sights and information they experience, leading to sensory overload.
