Luis Fonsi’s single, Despacito ft. Daddy Yankee, reached 4 billion views on YouTube this week, and proves that it is impossible to predict exactly what sort of content is likely to go viral.
The single was only released in January 2017, and yet it has already sailed past the likes of Gangnam Style by Psy and Sorry by Justin Beiber to be the first YouTube video in history to reach 4 billion views.
The song is indisputably catchy and has kicked off a trend for Spanish lyrics, imitations and parodies. Despacito shows no sign of slowing down as it steamrolls toward the monumental 5 billion view figure. We’ll be keeping a keen eye on it’s journey as it continues to be the most watched video in YouTube history, which this handy counter predicts will be some time towards the end of 2017.
